Expriments were carried out with a low carbon steel to study the influence or pause in stress alternation on the fatigue at elevated temperature. The test temperatures were 450°C and 300°C and the frequency of alternating stress was 1 500 cpm. The tests were conducted under the condition or constant strain amplitide, by rotary bending fatigue tests. The pause of stress alternation was realized io two sorts of programs. In one case, a pause was given after the stress alternation of half the number of cycles to fracture under continuous loading, and in another case stress alternation or one fifth or one tenth of the number of cycles to fracture under continuous loading was applied intermittently (twice a day). The temperature during the interval of a pause was maintained at the test temperature. According to the results or tests, the influence or pause on fatigue was 1ittle in the range of duration of pause of 100 to 200 hours tested, and the distribution of hardness in the cross section or specimen showed little difference between the two cases with and without pause. These results are consistent with the conclusion deduced from the idea used by authors as the basis of analysing the dynamic creep rupture.
