In order to improve the lubricating performance of the gear-tooth suface, the authors investigated the relationships of lubrication properties to the specific sliding, the relative radius of curvature and the roughness of contact surface with the roller testing apparatus, and obtained the following results. The friction obtained under the sliding motion with rolling is extremely larger than the friction under the pure rolling. In the region of semi-fluid and boundary lubrication, the maximum friction coefficient is found at the comparatively small specific sliding and the specific sliding has little effect on the oil film thickness. The film thickness increases proportionally to the relative radius of curvature, and the relative radius of curvature has no influence on the friction coefficent. Under any lubricating condition, it is neccessary to use the surface having the roughness smother than 4μ of peak to valley roughness for the purpose of obtaing small friction coefficient.
