To examine the mechanism of intermittent combustion which repeats the normal firing in every other or every third times with a considerable regularity, the present author carried out some experiments with a crankcase-scavenged two-cycle engine changing the delivery ratio (K) and the air-fuel ratio (A/F) respectively. Some conclusions obtained may be summarized as follows : a) The region of intermittent combustion is governed mainly by the mixture ratio and the delivery ratio. In the over rich side of mixture ratio the existence of such region can bepointed out distinctly, but in the over weak side it is shown only as the obscure region owing to the large fluctuation of fuel amount. b) Regarding the mechanism of intermittent combustion, if the engine once operates in a normal combustion cycle, the ignition of the next cycle is missed surely by the decrease of fresh mixture and air-fuel ratio. According to the miss-firing which brings to the next cycle the inverse effects, the next cycle can operate in normal firing. Consequently the firing and miss-firing are repeated with regular alternation, then the such phenomenon seems to be the so-called intermittent combustion.
