The mechanism of flaking phenomena resulted from rolling fatigue of hardened ball and roller bearing steels were exprimentally studied. It was ascertained that the reversible shearing stress in the sub-surface layer parallel to the rolling surface is most effective to the rolling fatigue flaking. The study was conducted on the cross sections of many test-pieces as well as ball bearings showing micro-cracks in the sub-surface layer. These cracks were mostly located in the place where amplitude of shearing stress was calculated to be maximum, and were grown in the direction of rolling. The fatigued area under the surface showed increased hardness and was easily etched showing unigue needle-like etched appearance when etched with special etching reagent. Many cracks were found to have started on the spots of defects such as non-metallic inclusions. The relationship between the types of non-metallic inclusions and rolling fatigue life was also studied.
