On the Self-Closing of the Guide Vanes in the Water Turbine

In the water turbine, the hydro-dynamic force produces the moment around the supporting shaft of the guide vanes. If this moment is produced so as to close the guide vanes, the water turbine can be protected from the accident in an emergency of the controlling apparatus for the water turbine. From this point of view, the investigation on the self-closing of the guide vane was performed. This paper contains certain experimental results of a model of circular wing lattice with the spiral casing and the two methods of calculating the moment around the supporting shaft of the vanes, i. e. one method is that based on the theory of circular wing lattice developed by the present author and the other that developed from the thin airfoil theory of Munk. Numerical examples coincide considerably well with experimental results.
