Dynamic stresses in helical gear teeth are measured by a power circulating type gear testing machine. The ground gears of which teeth accuracy is held at the 1st class of JIS and pinion is crowned, are tested as reduction gears. Experiments are carried out under the peripheral speed 5.7∼45.3m/s and the peripheral force 400∼4000 kg. Dynamic stresses of helical gear teeth are suddenly increased at the critical speed, at which the tooth contact frequency is equal to the natural frequency of the effective mass of gears under the influence of a spring of the teeth stiffness, similarly to the case of spur gear teeth. At a speed lower than the critical one, the stresses do not increase so much, and this condition is excellent compared with the condition of spur gears of which dynamic loads increase linearly with the increase of speed.
