Abstract

The behaviour of a ball in a ball bearing was observed through flux change caused by a magnetized ball. An angular-contact ball bearing of the type 7307 B was used in the experiment. Under pure thrust load, the ball makes a complicated three-dimensional motion. The relation between the angular velodties of the ball ωb, the case ωc and the inner ring ω was investigated. The ratio ωbc and ωc/ω are closely related to the parameter ZFc/Pa, where Z, Fc and Pa denote the number of balls, the centrifugal force per ball and the thrust load, respectively. In the range ZFc/Pa>1, not only the centrifugal force has a significant influence upon the behaviour of the ball, but also the effect of the gyroscopic moment of the ball becomes remarkab1e. These results were compared with the theoretical values.
