Abstract

A method of solution applying Hamilton's canonical equations is outlined for the equation of motion of free vibration of a two-gimbal gyro. The term of main interest is the term in the solution for the outer gimbal which is proportional to time and indicates a steady rate of change of the central position of the oscillations of the outer gimbal. To solve the equation of motion of free vibration of a free gyro, B. T. Plymale and R. Goodstein used a classical, well established perturbation method at the expense of any physical segnificance and they got an approximate solution of the steady-rate term of the outer gimbal of a free gyro subjected to an impulse. The author gets the steady-rate term in the form of the series for any initial conditions. By using phase-plane he could show with physical significance that the solution of the inner gimbal is a periodic function of time and the solution of the outer gimbal is the sum of the periodic term and steady-rate term.
