Another writer's report in the previous issue dealt with indoor tests, conducted under lubricated and non-lubricated conditions, on combinations of 0.7% C standard structure steel with deposited weld high manganese steel as well as with cast, within a contact stress range of 50∼90 kg/mm2 and the rate of slide ranging from 0 to 15 cm/sec, by use of an Amsler type abrasion testing machine. As a result, it was indicated that abrasion was large on both combinations when non-lubricated, but was greatly reduced when lubricated. The cause for it was found to be that there existed a hardened layer in the contact surface of high manganese steel. In this report, the problems on the formation of such hardened layers prcduced on high Mnsteel were studied, and obtained the results as follows : (1) Such hardened layer is produced throughout sub-surface fatigue section, irrespective of the frequency of contact.(2) Such hardened layer develops as subsequent pressure contacts increase.
