Abstract
The burnout limit in pool boiling was experimentally studied by heating one end of a copper rod whose other end, serving as the heating surface, was immersed in water with its face downward or upward. A refractory flange was fitted around the copper rod to be touched with water only at the face of its end. The result obtained was as follows : 1) In the case of downward facing the burnout mechanism was different from that in the other cases because of the presence of the steam blanket on the heating surface. 2) In the case of upward facing the burnout heat flux was similar to the result from an electrically heated wire. 3) The diameter of the heating surface influenced the burnout heat flux in every facing.
