Abstract

This paper examines practice in a Portuguese language maintenance class held for Brazilian children in Ōta City of Gunma Prefecture. This class is run by volunteers who are active in Ōta City schools, and also sees participation by members of Pazuru, a student organization at Tokyo Woman's Christian University. This paper is primarily based on observation records and retrospectives written by Pazuru members, concerning how practice in the classroom leads to empowerment for the children and other participants. It was possible as a result to ascertain how children from various backgrounds attained a sense of accomplishment through collaboration with learning assistants, and how the new roles in the classroom activities fostered an affirmative sense of self. Also, due to interaction with the children and the adult Brazilian participants, the university students evolved in their supporting role, and cultivated the ability to be receptive to, and coexist within a multicultural environment.
