Description

The purpose of this article is to ascertain the function of fillers as markers of text structure, focusing on ano, which has until now been considered to be an interjection or hesitation marker, through the use of direction-giving discourses, whose structure is relatively explicit. We specified the location where ano appears, having considered that the direction-giving discourse consists of two parts: "on-going sequences", which correspond to direction-sets, and "side sequences", which are inserted to deal with communication problems. The result showed that ano tends to be used when side sequences are being introduced and when the objects being mentioned by direction-givers need to be identified with actual objects by hearers in on-going sequences. In other words, ano tends to be used when the speakers pay special attention to the hearers' comprehension.
