Abstract
The history of the gemmology in Japan can roughly be divided into three agesas follows. 1) The 1st age: the Tsunashiro Wada (1856-1920) and Satoshi Suzuki hadtaken an active part around 1900. T. Wada wrote the "Hougyokushi (寶玉試)" in 1889. It was the first textbook of the gemmology in Japan. 2) The 2nd age: the gemmology was made well known by Takeo Kume (1887-1958) and so on in around 1960. 3) The 3rd (present) age: after the gemmological society of Japan (GSJ) wasinitiated in 1974. It is common knowledge fact that GSJ contributed to the improvement of thegemology in the world.
