Description

     Three major purposes for carrying out research of the Japanese national character have been to study Japanese ways of thinking, social survey techniques, and methods for analyzing social survey data. The author has been involved in this research since the 1970s and has a number of publications concerning these subjects. The purpose of this paper is to summarize this research in order to demonstrate the various kinds of problems that have been faced along with how these problems were solved. The topics are concerned with Japanese attitude trends over the latter half of the twentieth century, continuitity in long term longitudinal survey data, the reconstruction of statistics based upon Akaike information criterion and so forth.
