Abstract
We observed extremely high frequency of promiscuous mating of female chimpanzees in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda. During the observation in 2001, three females copulated for 3.1 times per hour in average. In an extreme case, a female copulated for 39 times within 343 min, and she sometimes copulated with two males within one minutes. They copulated with most of adult male chimpanzees found in the party and there was no aggression between male chimpanzees. During the observation in 2002, one female almost exclusively copulated with one adult male who was showing possessive behaviors, and her copulation rate was very low. However, another female showed frequent and promiscuous mating pattern as found in 2001. There were no clear dominance relationships among adult males in the group studied in the Kalinzu Forest, which seemed to cause such an extremely high frequency of promiscuous mating.
