Abstract

Hinokitiol is well known to have antibacterial effect. We applied HINOKI AP Cream that contained hinokitiol together with glycyrretin and moistureizers to 20 patients with atopic dermatitis to evaluate its safety and utility. Great improvement in dryness was observed in almost all the patients. To examine the effect of hinokitiol, HINOKI AP Cream and its vehicle were applied to the right and left flxor forearms of 11 cases, respectively. Before and after 2-week applications, TEWL and conductance were measured on the skin of each forearm, and the number of colonies of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from each skin surface were counted. TEWL and conductance improved after applications in both sides, whereas the reduction of the number of Staphylococcus aureus was more prominent in the HINOKI AP Cream side. No clinical adverse effect was observed.
These results indicate that HINOKI AP Cream is a useful and safe skin care product for the patients with atopic dermatitis, in which Staphylococcus aureus could be one of the worsening factors.
Skin Research, 1: 418-423, 2002
