Description
We investigated the safety and usefulness of camellia oil and a camellia oil-containing shampoo in 22 seborrheic dermatitis patients. The designated period of use was 4 weeks, and the designated frequency of use was 2×/week or more. Results from symptomatic observation of erythema, erosion, scale, crust, excoriation and itching skin all demonstrated significant improvement (p<0.01). Usefulness was evaluated as “Useful” or better in 95% of cases, and no adverse effects were observed.
Scalp lipids were analyzed, a spore number of Malassezia was counted which is implicated in occurrence of seborrheic dermatitis. The spore number was significantly decreased (p<0.01). And among scalp lipids, a significant decrease (p<0.05) was also observed in hydrocarbon groups (hydrocarbons, squalene) and free fatty acids after completion of the clinical study. The Malassezia spore number and free fatty acid quantity were both decreased in 14/18 patients, and improvement of skin symptoms was also observed.
Based on these results, we believe that camellia oil and camellia oil-containing shampoos are useful scalp and hair care agents in seborrheic dermatitis patients.
