Experiments were carried out to determine the upper level of zinc which could be tolerated by the chick without adverse effects. Three zinc compounds were used. A total of 120 Rock Horn male chicks five days of age fed on a basal diet (Table 1) were divided into eight groups of 15 birds.
The chicks had been so selected that the eight groups had essentially the same average initial body weight.
Graded amounts of zinc, ranging from none to 3, 000μg per gram of body weight, in the forms of sulfate, oxide, and carbonate, were added to the basal diet at the expense of corn.
The chicks were housed in a plastic-coated, electrically-heated battery kept in a room relatively free of dust at a constant temperature of 75±5°F. They were allowed to have feed ad libitum throughout the experimental period (from 5 to 30 days of age). The water given was distilled one contained in plastic waterpans. The feed was placed in plastic-coated troughs.
The basal diet (without addition of zinc) analyzed 8.37mg percent of zinc (by Dithizone method)8).
The results obtained are as follows.
1. The zinc compounds were tolerated in the following decreasing order: oxide, carbonate, and sulfate.
2. Mortality rate was not so high, except when the largest amount (3, 000μg/g) of zinc, in the form of sulfate and carbonate, had been given.
3. The changes caused by excess zinc included delay in growth, shortening and thickening of the tibia, poor feathers, and anemia as proved by the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and hematocrit value.
4. The amount of zinc accumulated in the liver was essentially the same as that in the tibia when expressed by μg/g. The correlation coefficient (r) between the liver and the tibia in this regard was r=+0.940 (t<0.1).
5. The correlation of gain in body weight (in grams, plotted on the Y axis) to zinc accumulation (in logarithm for the amount expressed by μg; plotted on the X axis) is shown in Fig. 2.
Liver: r=-0.798
Regression line (r. l.), y=-122x+570
Tibia: r=-0.9266
r. l., y=-136x+621
Pectoral muscle: r=+0.777
r. l., y=323x-541.
