Although nitrofuran derivatives have been recognized as a growth-stimulant for broiler chicks in America, there has been little work to confirm it in Japan. The authors have been studying the effectiveness of nitrofurans for both growing chicks and laying hens from the nutritional point of view. Some part of their studies with broilers has been accomplished and the results are summarized as follows.<br>A total of 160 and 320 male cross-bred chicks (White Leghorn male×Barred Plymouth Rock female) were divided into 16 and 32 groups of 10 birds each and assigned to 4 and 8 lots containing four replicates each in the first and second trial, respectively. The composition of broiler feed and kinds of feed additives used are indicated in Tables 1 and 2. The results thus obtained are shown in Table 3.<br>In conclusion, supplement of furazolidone, one of the nitrofuran derivatives, tended to increase the weight gain of broilers, although its effectiveness was not found to be significant.<br>Contrary to the observation of POPE and SCHAIBLE, however, the combination of furazolidone with penicillin or chlortetracycline showed no increase in growth response or feed efficiency.
