In addition to examining the influence of age of weaning on urea utilization by young calves, an attempt was also made to investigate whether the early weaned calves grow at a normal rate, up to 3 months of age, when fed with urea ration. To facilitate this study, a feeding trial lasting a period of 11 weeks (from 2 to 13 weeks of age) was conducted with twenty-four Holstein male calves, which were weaned at 4 or 7 weeks of age. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Though there was marked differences in feed consumptions and feed conversion efficiencies, among the calves weaned at different ages, the total liveweight gain and skeletal growth were not affected by the age of weaning. 2. Regardless of the different ages of weaning, the calves on a urea ration grew as rapidly as those on a diet of natural protein (soybean meal), and their growth rates were equal to or slightly higher than those of the NRC standard. 3. It is likely that early weaning had no harmful influence upon urea utilization by calves, or rather stimulates it.
