The quarter difference of Na+Cl value of the milk, Qd(Na+Cl)mEq/l, indicates the degree of abnormality in composition of the individual quarter milks. In this paper, the quantitative relationships between Qd(Na+Cl) value [Qd(Na+Cl)<50mEq/l] and the increases in the bovine plasma proteins in the 30 abnormal quarter milks sorted out from 4×22 quarter milk samples of 5 Holstein cows were reported. The measurements of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the milk samples were made by the single radial immunodiffusion method. The quarter differences of each plasma protein, Qd(BSA) and Qd(IgG)mg/dl, were obtained in the same way as Qd(Na+Cl); Qd=Qabn-Qn, where Qn denoted the quarter milk of which Na+Cl value was the lowest among the quarter milks of the same udder, and Qabn denoted abnormal quarter milk of which Na+Cl value was at least 7.2mEq/l higher than Qn. Qd(BSA) and Qd(IgG) increased exponentially with the increase in Qd(Na+Cl). At the higher range of Qd(Na+Cl) value, a large amount of plasma proteins could pass into milk. At the same time, proportion of BSA in the total plasma protein passed into milk gradually increased with the increase in Qd(Na+Cl) value, while Qd(IgG) was more than twice of Qd(BSA) in the abnormal quarter milks. The change in permeability of the mammary gland to the plasma proteins in the abnormal quarter was discussed. Proportion of the plasma protein to the total milk protein in milks was estimated to be less than about 10 percent, as far as the Qd(Na+Cl) value of the abnormal quarter milk did not exceed 50mEq/l.
