6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD) variants controlled genetically have been reported many workers since first researched by FILDEs and PARR (1963). Genetic electrophoretic patterns of the enzyme in red cells have been detected in human, rats, cats and pigs. Three variants in PGD of pig red cells were reported by SAISON (1968) on herd of Canada and Europe. The present paper dealt with studies on the PGD variants in red cells of Middle Yorkshire in Japan. Pig red cells were washed five times, and haemolysed and extracted by adding an equal volume of distilled water and freezing. Starch gel electrophoresis was performed by the method of CARTER et al (1968). The PGD patterns were recognized three variants in pig red cells by electrophoresis. Three phenotypes were the fast mobile band, the slow mobile band and the triple band, which was composed of the fast, slow and intermediate bands. Their phenotypes were designated PGD:A, PGD:B and PGD:AB. Family of pigs was tested for the inheritance of PGD isozymes. It was confirmed that PGD variants in pig red cells were controlled with two allelic autosomal genes, PGDA and PGDB, which were codominant and inherited by the MENDEL'S law. The genotypes are PGDA/PGDA, PGDB/PGDB and PGDA/PGDB. Frequencies of PGD variants in red cells of 72 pigs were PGD:A type 59.7%, PGD:AB type 36. 1% and PGDB type 4.2%. Gene frequencies of PGD variants were observed PGDA=0.7778 and PGDB=0.2222.
