説明

In the first experiment, the accuracy of ultrasonic measurements was studied on 25 Landrace pigs. Ultrasonic measurements were made twice at five positions taken at 10cm intervals from 20cm behind the spine of the scapula and 3-4cm laterally from the midline a day before slaughter. The same five positions were measured by the ruler probe on hot carcasses and the next day, other three positions, shoulder, back and loin, were measured at the midline of cold carcasses. The repeatability estimates of ultrasonic measurings were above 0.9 in each position and the correlations between the mean values of ultrasonic and carcass measurements were 0.96 for hot carcasses and 0.88 for cold carcasses. In the second experiment, ultrasonic measurements were made on 13 sires, 49 dams and their 187 offsprings and their additional 98 offsprings were slaughtered and measured on cold carcasses at the mean weight of 90kg. The offsprings were divided on paper into the low fat and high fat group according to the mean values of their parents. The differences between two groups were 0.20cm for ultrasonic measurings at parents and 0.13, 0.22cm for ultrasonic and carcass measurements at offsprings, respectively. The heritability of back fat thickness measured by ultrasonics, estimated from the intra-sire regression of offspring on dam, was 0.50.
