Using a bioassay based on 32P-uptake by chick testes, gonadotropic activity of the cephalic and the caudal lobes of anterior pituitary at various times during 24hr period was measured in immature and adult male and female chickens of White Leghorn breed which were kept under 14hr (05.00-19.00 hours) light per day. In 5-week-old males and females, a peak of the gonadotropic activity was found in the caudal lobe at 14.00 hours, while in 7-week-old males and in 10-week-old males and females a peak was also found in the caudal lobe at 11.00 hours. In adult males, a similar change was also observed not only in the caudal lobe but also in the cephalic lobe. In both lobes, a peak was observed at 11.00 hours. In adult females, two peaks were observed in the cephalic lobe: one at 11.00 hours and the other at 00.00-03.00 hours (7-11hr before expected ovulation), while in the caudal lobe the pattern of the change was somewhat different that of the change in the cephalic lobe.
