Abstract
To examine the effects of the inhibition of cathecolamine excretion on the adaptive responses of the sheep exposed to the cold environment (0°C, R. H. 70%), reserpine (1.00μg/kg) was injected intramuscularly for seven days. Three Corriedale ewes were used in this experiment. Physiological saline was injected instead of reserpine to the same animals under the same experimental conditions. The average daily excretions of noradrenaline and adrenaline to the urine were 48.1±7.4 and 24.6±5.4μg/day in the reserpine injected group and 91.9±10.5 and 33.8±3.5μg/day in the saline injected group. The amounts of cathecholamine excretion were lower in the reserpine group than those of the saline group, but significant decrease (P<0.01) was found only in noradrenaline excretion. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in respiration rate, glucose, free fatty acid, lactic acid concentrations in the blood and daily urine volume. In the reserpine group, heart rate was high (P>0.01) and rectal temperature was low (P<0.01) compared to that of the saline group. The heat production rate decreased significantly (P<0.01) in the reserpine group (62.1±5.1Kcal/hr) in comparison with that of the saline group 87.5±6.1 (Kcal/hr). In the last few days of the experimental period, the rectal temperature, heat production and heart rate in the reserpine group decreased progressively. On the contrary, remarkable increase of excretion of both noradrenaline and adrenaline was accompanied by the emaciation of all the experimental animals, which might be due to the results of depletion of cathecholamine from the body.
