Monensin was blended with a concentrate diet at the levels of 0, 30 and 60 ppm and fed to steers for nine weeks to determine its effects on growth rats, on ruminal VFA and ammonia levels, and on numbers of ruminal microbes. Average daily gains for the three treatment groupss were: 0.66, 0.90 and 0.83kg/day, respectively, and was greater (P<0.05) for steers fed 30 ppm monensin than for the control group of steers. Feed intake tended to decrease in all groups fed monensin. Total ruminal VFA increased (P<0.05) by feeding monensin at the level of 60 ppm. Molar percentages of butyrate decreased (P<0.05) and propionate increased (P<0.01) with monensin diets. Molar percentage of acetate also decreased with monensin feeding but the differences from control were not significant. Ruminal ammonia concentration decreased (P<0.05) in monensin treated groups. Total numbers of protozoa tended to decrease and those of bacteria increased in monensin groups, though the differences from control were not statistically significant. The distribution of ruminal microflora was affected by the monensin treatment. Gram nega-tive cocci (0.3-1.0μ) decreased (P<0.05) and Gram positive cocci(0.5-1.1μ) and Gram negative rods (0.7-0.9×1.2-3.0μ) increased (P<0.01 and P<0.05) in monensin groups.
