To evaluate the effects of ammonia treatment for low quality roughages on the utilization of fibrous materials by the ruminants, nitrogen (N) contents and in vitro dry matter disappearances (IVDMD) were determined on the original starting materials (SM), that is rice straw (RS), rice hulls (RH) and orchardgrass hay (OH), the ammoniated starting materials (ASM) and their fibrous materials (FM), which were partitioned into neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and crude fiber (CF), and the ammoniated fibrous materials (AFM). Nitrogen contents of the FM prepared from the ASM and of the AFM were exactly higher than those from the SM. Concentration of ammonia nitrogen in supernatant after incubation of the ammoniated materials was apt to be slightly high compared to that of the untreated materials. IVDMD of FM was highest with CF and lowest with ADF, and those were lower than that of SM. IVDMD of the ammoniated NDF and ADF was high compared to that of NDF and ADF prepared from the ASM and showed about twice of the value observed in the corresponded FM from the SM. IVDMD of ND soluble, AD soluble and hemicellulose were calculated from the IVDMD data on SM, ASM, NDF and ADF. In RS and OH, the highest IVDMD was found on ND souble and the lowest was on hemicellulose. While in RH, IVDMD of these fractions were calculated to be a low value. In all the SM, IVDMD of these fractions were exactly improved by ammonia treatment. It is considered that the effects of ammonia treatment for the low quality roughage as a feed of ruminants are the increase of nitrogen content and the increment of bacterial digestion for cell contents and fibrous materials resulted from structural changes of cell wall.
