Two experiments were conducted to determine the optimum substitution levels of test ingredients and the efect of breeds of chicks on metabolizable energy (ME) values. 1. Substitution levels: ME values of corn, barley, defatted rice bran, soybean meal, rapeseed meal and fish meal were determined at the substitution levels of 20, 40, and 60% for cereal grains, 15, 30 and 45% for rice bran, and 20, 30 and 40% for protein feed ingredients. Average ME values of each feed ingredient were not signincantly diferent among three substitution levels. However, the variation of the ME values tended to increase with decreasing substitution level it was concluded that theoptimum substitution level was 40% or more for common feed ingredients. 2. Breeds of chicks: ME values of corn-soy basal diet, 50% barley diets (50% of the basal diet replaced by common barley or high protein barley) and 8% tallow diet (8% of the basal diet replaced by tallow) were determined using laying-type (White Leghorn) and broiler-type (White Cornish×White Rock) chicks. There were no significant differences between laying-type and broiler-type chicks in ME values of two varieties of barley and tallow. However, the ME value of tallow was slightly higher for White Leghorn than broiler.
