The experiments presented in this paper was designed to study the energy metabolism of the chicks on a methionine deficient diet and on the same diet supplemented with methionie. Twenty chicks were fed respectively in equal quantities of diet based upon soybean meal, glucose monohydrate and soybean oil as the protein, carbohydrate and fat sources for two weeks. Carcasses of experimental animals were analyzed for protein, fat and energy.
The bird's ability to store the metabolizable energy of the diets was studied by the use of caloric value of the carcasses. Oxygen consumption was measured by the method of STRITE and YACOWITZ.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. A significant decrease in weigt gain and feed efficiency were observed with the deficiency of methionine.
2. Methionine deficiency did not affect the protein digestibility.
3. No significant difference was observed in metabolizable energy values between meth-ionine supplemented and deficient diets.
4. Chicks fed the methionine deficient diet had equal amount of gains in tissue fat but lower gains of protein. The lack of methionine caused less energy to be stored as protein, and this was not compensated for by the increased retention of energy as fat.
5. Difference in efficiency of energy metabolism was observed based on the determinations of heat production and tissue gains. Specific dynamic effect and the total heat production (metabolizable energy intake minus the sum of energy of the tissue gain) increased as the dietary protein was deficient in methionine.
6. More oxygen was consumed in terms of ml per Kg body weigt per minute by the deficient birds than the birds on the supplemented diet.
