説明

The epithelial structure of the forestomach in the bactrian camel, Camelus bactrianus was observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a light microscope (LM). The epithelial layers of compartments 1 and 2 of the forestomach consisted of a non-glandular region and a glandular region, while compartment 3 consisted of the glandular region alone. The surface of the non-glandular region was covered by thick keratinized epithelium, and no papilla-shaped projections such as ruminal papillae were observed on the luminal surface. The SEM observation showed many fold-shaped projections on the epithelial cells in the non-glandular region. The LM observation confirmed that the glands in glandular regions resembled the cardiac glands in other animal species, since these glandular cells were tall, laterally compressed and contained mucous granules.
