Using registration records, the breeding and genetic structure of the Japanese Black Cattle in Chugoku Districts were studied. The data analyzed for this study were obtained from randomly selected heifers registered in Hyogo, Tottori, Shimane, Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures in 1960, 1970 or 1980. The diversity of sires was estimated by Simpson's method, using 500 heifers. F-statistics (FIT, FST and FIS), index of subdivision and average coefficients of relationship within and between prefectures were estimated, using 200heifers. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The diversities of sires decreased year by year in all the five prefectures. This tendency was remarkable, especially during 1970-1980 in Shimane, Okayama and Hiroshima. 2. The diversities of sires in some local districts increased during 1970-1980 in Hyogo and Shimane, while they decreased in the most local districts of Tottori, Okayama and Hiroshima. 3. FIT and FST increased, but FIS tended to decline during 1960-1980 in all the prefectures. 4. The indexes of subdivision declined during 1960-1980 in all t he prefectures. The values reached around 1 in 1980; 0.93, 1.31, 0.66, 1.02 and 1.13 in Hyogo, Tottori, Shimane, Okayama and Hiroshima, respectively. 5. The average coefficients of relationship within the same prefecture increased remarkably. Most of the average coefficients of relationship between prefectures also increased, but the increases were much smaller than that within the same prefecture. These results indicate that the genetic structure of the Japanese Black Cattle in the Chugoku Districts has been becoming to be homogeneous within a prefecture, but each prefecture seems to persist in retaining its own sub-population of the cattle.
