Balance trials with dairy cows and adult wether sheep were done to study the effect of the addition of nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium to corn silage. The control diet consisted of corn silage and ground corn grain; the diet with additives consisted of corn silage, corn grain, urea and calcium phosphate (tri-basic, feed grade). When cows and sheep were fed the diet with additives, total excretions of nitrogen from feces, urine and milk were less than the intake from the diet. But when cows were fed the control diet, the balance was negative. For the control diet, balances of phosphorus in cows and sheep were -17.4 and -7.2 mg/kg body weight/day respectively. On the other hand, these were positive (8.1mg/kg/day in cows, 1.6 in sheep) for the diet with additives. Balances of calcium showed a similar trend. Apparent digestibilities of phosphorus in cows and sheep fed the control diet were 21.0 and -16.9% respectively. When they were fed the diet with additives, these were 39.6 and 6.7%. Apparent digestibilities of inorganic phosphorus were higher for the diet with additives than for the control diet. Conversely, digestibilities of organic phosphorus were lower.
