Virgin female rats of Wistar strain of about 200g of body weight were used. Experimental diet (DCP: 15%, ME: 3.8 kcal/g) composed of casein, corn starch, soyben oil and others was given to the animals. Daily feeding level was 15g/rat. Changes of protein and energy retentions in the maternal body with the progress of pregnancy excluding products of conception (uteri, fetuses, placentas and amniotic fluids) were investigated comparing with those of the non-pregnant rat reared under the same feeding condition as in the pregnant rat. It was observed that protein was stored in the maternal body before day 17 of pregnancy when fetal and placental growth were slow, and protein stored in the maternal body was withdrawn to the fetus and placenta after day 17 of pregnancy when rapid fetal and placental growth started. This result reaffirmed the finding of NAISMITH and MORGAN, and NIIYAMA et al. On the other hand, no significant difference was observed between energy retention in the maternal body and that in the non-pregnant rats and such biphasic pattern as found in protein metabolism in the maternal body was not observed in energy metabolism.
