The dam-foal behavior of throughbreds was observed during the period while the foals grew from three weeks to six months of age. Recorded and analyzed were the posture, suckling activity, mutual interaction within foals and threatening behavior of dams. Through this analysis, it was found that these factors of behavior changed remarkably at some stages of foals. 1) The posture of foals was classified into three types, standing, squatting and lying. On the field, incidences of foals engaged in standing posture were over 95% after nine weeks of age, while in the stable they were about 50% during three to 15 weeks of age and increased remarkably after 16 weeks of age. 2) The mean durations of suckling bouts decreased with age of foals, but no significant difference between any two ages of weeks was noticed. The mean duration during three to 33 weeks of age was about 70sec. There was a significant difference (P<0.01) in the variances of the duration of suckling bouts between primiparous dams and multiparous ones. It is presumed that the experiences of mothering care had made the dams skillful in nursing. 3) The mean suckling interval was 18 minutes at three weeks of age, increased gradually with age and became 55 minutes at 27 weeks of age on the field. In the stable, it increased with age at 16 weeks in the same manner as on the field and stopped extending after those weeks. As the cause of this phenomenon, it was indicated that the role of the dam's milk became not so important for the foal after these period, because the mean intervals of foals didn't correlate with their daily gain after those period. 4) Analyzing the frequency of the interaction within foals, the foals were found to have a clear preference for playing partners with same sex in later weeks.
