Abstract

The distance between six thoroughbred dams and their foal in the field during the foal's age of three weeks to six months were recorded and analyzed on purpose to determine the specific indicator for classifying the types of the relationships between dams and foals. The mean distance between each dam and her foal tended to prolong with age of the foal. The distributions of the distance recorded every minute in each weeks of foal's age were estimated to obey the geometric distributions [f (x)=pqx-1 x=1, 2, 3, ……]. A positive correlation between the mean distance and the frequency of the foal's playing with other foals was observed especially in colts (P<0.001). The mean distance also correlated with the suckling interval in the foals (P<0.02). The mean distance between all of the foals and their dam was relatively constant during nine weeks to 22 weeks of age and remarkably observed were individual differences in the levels of the mean distance between each dam and her foal. In conclusion, it was considered that the types of dam-foal relationships could be classified with the levels of the mean distance between dams and their foal during nine to 22 weeks of foal's age.
