Description

Volatile odorous compounds of swine feces were studied in order to clarify the malodorous substance and to obtain the fundamental information on the malodor contorol. Steam distillate of swine feces, which was added an equivalent amount of water and adjuted to pH 2.0, was extracted with ethyl ether and the extract was separated into acidic and neutral fractions. The neutral fraction, which had a characteristic unpleasant odor, was further separated into five fractions by silicic acid column chromatography. All fractions were analyzed by GLC, GC-MS, IR and NMR. Thirty-four constituents, including 18 acids, 11 aldehydes, two alcohols and three other compounds, were identified. Out of these, nine compounds, i. e., 12-methyltiidecanal, 12 and 13-methyltetradecanals, n-octadecanal, 9-and 11-octadecenals, 9, 12-octadecadienal, n-pentadecanol and n-hexadecanol, were newly identified volatile odorous components from swine feces.
