A behavioral audibility curve was determined for Holstein cattle. Subjects were three growing cattle aged 4 months at the beginning of testing. They were trained to place their nose or chin on the reporting plate when a tone was presented. They were deprived of water for 15 hours during the night and given a water reward in the testing situation. Pure tones of 9 frequencies, ranging from 0.016 kHz to 16 kHz in octave steps, were used for the hearing test. At 4 or 5 sound intensity levels of each frequeny, the responding rates of the cattle to tones presented ten times were determine l. Psycophysical procedures were used to estimate thresholds. The responding rates were transformed into Z-values according to a standard normal distribution. Threshold was defined as the intensity that indicated a 50% responding rate, that is to say, Z-value is zero. Threshold was estimated from the regression equation of Z-values on sound intensity in each frequency. As a results behavioral estimates of auditory thresholds for Holstein cattle in 9 frequencies were (0.064kHz, 61.8dB SPL), (0.125, 44.2), (0.250, 38.7), (0.500, 30.5), (1, 27.6), (2, 18.8), (4, 44.7), (8, 30.2) and (16, 20.3), respectively. The background noise level of test room, however, was (52.0±2.3) dB SPL. This suggests that auditory thresholds in a free sound field could be (10-20) dB SPL lower than the current results.
