Objectives were to determine the toxin productivity of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from bovine mastitis cases and isolates from human clinical patients, both isolated from the same district, and to find the prevalent relation between bovines and humans. Two hundred and ninety S. aureus isolates from bovine mastitis milk obtained from 263 milking cows of 132 dairy herds and 131 isolates from human clinical patients in a hospital were used in this study. Among bovine isolates, 168 (57.9%) produced one or several toxins; 150 (51.7%) were identified as staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs: SEA-D), 92 (31.7%) as toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1), and 74 (25.5%) as both SEs and TSST-1 producing isolates. Of the SEs, SEC was predominant at 47.3%. On the other hand, 96 (73.3%) of human isolates produced one or several toxins; 90 (68.7%) were identified as SEs, 59 (45.0%) as TSST-1, and 53 (40.5%) as both SEs and TSST-1 producing isolates. Of the SEs, SEC was also predominant at 54.4%. The most predominant coagulase type was VI for bovines and II for humans, respectively, but none of type VI was found in human isolates. The combination of coagulase type VI, SEC and TSST-1 was found. most abundantly in bovine isolates, but it was coagulase type II, SEC and TSST-1 in human isolates. None of type II producing both SEC and TSST-1 was found in bovine isolates. Positive egg-yolk reaction results were obtained in 2.2% and 95.8% among predominant isolates of bovines and humans, respectively. It was suggested that there was little possible connection between bovines and humans on toxinogenic diseases though toxin productivity was high in both isolates from bovines and humans.
