The work aims the effective utilization of pig skin and the prevention of pollution. In order to avoid the pollution of chromium salts from the shaving dust or trimming scrap and tanning effluent, the introduction of wet white stock to leather making is now being tried worldwide1, 2). Using the wet white stock from pig skin, upper leather was prepared in this study. The properties of the resultant toggle-dried upper leather were evaluated by chemical analysis and measurements of physical properties on the leather. The following results were obtained. 1) Chrome-containing effluents could be restricted to the washing waste liquor prior to neutralization. The amount of chromium discharged had a low level of about 2.1g Cr2O3 per 5kg raw skin. 2) The operations of samming, splitting and shaving on wet white stock could be achieved in the manner not much different from that of normal wet blue stock. 3) The leather which was chrome tanned for shoe upper leather from wet white was excellent in dye affinity, but was somewhat inferior in the feature of grain break. With regard to physical properties and chemical analysis, remarkable inferior values could not be noticed.
