Abstract

Two feeding trials were carried out to investigate the effects of ensiled ear-corn harvested by self-propelled forage harvester on DM intake, milk production and composition, and volatile compounds of milk compared with imported flaked corn for lactating cows. A 3×3Latin square study was conducted with 6 Holstein cows each trial. Dietary treatments were flaked corn (FC), flaked corn and ear-corn silage (MIX), and ear-corn silage (ECS) with grass silage (trial 1), grass and corn silage (trial 2). Diets with ECS (15%, 10% of each diets substituted of FC in trials 1 and 2, respectively) did not affect on DM intake, milk yield, milk composition, or blood property. γ-decalactone and γ-dodecalactone in detected volatile compounds of milk were higher with the ECS diet than the FC diet in trial 1. There were no significant differences in lactones in trial 2 with corn silage as base roughage. There results indicated that, compared to FC, feeding ECS had not change intake and milk production but had an effect on lactones in milk.
