Description
The objective of the present study is to focus on and elucidate the observation, assessment, and support skills of expert nurses for the families of terminal stage patients in the emergency room and to investigate the characteristics of this nursing practice. We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven expert nurses who were engaged in emergency nursing; then, we qualitatively and descriptively analyzed the data obtained and reached the following conclusions regarding nursing practice for families of terminal stage patients in the emergency room. As a nursing practice to aid the families of terminal stage patients in the emergency room, expert nurses observed the“ patient’s condition and progress” and assessed“ patient prognoses”; these would determine the direction of their subsequent support. In addition, they assessed the“ family emotions and their extent” based on the“ emotional reactions of the family.” They evaluated“ family perceptions,” or how the family perceived this understanding, based on the“ level of family understanding.” Moreover, they perceived“ family resources” and evaluated“ family capability” even when intervention could only be conducted for an extremely short period. Support skills were“ keeping close to the family” under the premise of“ doing one’s best for the patient,” while also“ creating psychological preparation to the loss” and“ supporting family strengths.”
