Abstract

The study aimed to clarify LCA errors caused by mismatches in system boundaries of materials actually inputted and those of background database. In CO2 emissions from wooden housing materials in their manufacturing process, such mismatches were found in as many as 70% of the cases examined. By comparison with IDEA, similar emission compositions were obtained from AIJ-LCA database, verifying the latter's usefulness for overviewing emission characteristics. However, specific analyses showed occurrence of 0.5 - 2 times more errors in the 68% confidence interval if mismatched database figures used. The study suggested such database mismatches be carefully interpreted in LCA studies.
