A response to the papers by Noriko Matsuura, Naoko Ueno, and Kensaku Yoshida included in this volume (originally delivered at the symposium entitled Language: Building Bridges between People with Multi-lingual Backgrounds held at Sophia University on June 22, 2002), this paper reflects on some of the problems, such as cultural frictions and the difficulties posed by bilingualism, resulting from living in the increasingly multi-lingual world brought about by globalization. Living in an environment where many languages coexist increases our sense of borderlessness and increases our awareness of the languages, maladies, disorders, and death lying beyond the boundaries of our everyday world. This is deeply related to the intrinsic roles of language in the creation and transmission of meaning and values and, especially, in the creation of systems of domination. In order to survive in such a multi-lingual world, it is important to come to terms not just with others but also with ourselves.
