Description

Wild Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata yakui) have come to damage crops greatly from 1970s on Yakushima Island, Japan. In order to evade the crop damage, 400-500 monkeys are killed for pest control every year. I investigated reasons why the crop damage by the monkeys have begun in 1970s and the way to compatible the solution of the problem with conservation of the wild monkeys. One of the main causes of crop damage by monkeys is thought to be intensive logging of broad leaved forest where was main habitat of monkeys from 1960s. Another is an increase in orange plantation which have been greatly damaged by monkeys from 1970s. Decrease in number of farmers and increase in average age of them also make the problem difficult to solve. In order to reduce the crop damage and to conserve the wild monkeys, rehabilitation of broad leaved forest, equipment for defend crops and regeneration of farmers are urgently required.
