Description

A survey of the flower visiting insects on three species of willows (Salix) was made at the dry riverbed of the Shogawa river from 1996 to 1998. About 40 species of 29 families in 7 orders were collected on the flowers of Salix spp. The importance of each insect as pollinator of Salix spp. was investigated from three parameters: number of insect individuals visiting female inflorescence, number of pollen grains attached on insect bodies and number of female flowers touched by insects. It was suggested that two species of wild bees (Andrena fukuiana and A. echizenia) were main pollinators of Salix gracilistyla and S. gilgiana, and A. echizenia and A. sublevigata were of S. subfragilis.
