The primary purpose of this study was to document the correspondence of grade walking at low speed and level walking/running at various speeds, and development of the equation of %HR and grade. Twenty-four young untrained Japanese women were enrolled in two tests on the specially designed treadmill for a higher grade exercise. The first test was the level walking/running in different speeds; 2.0 km/h, 4.0 km/h, 5.5 km/h, and 7.0 km/h (running) . The second test was the grade walking in different grades, 0, 10, 20, and 30% with the velocity of 2.0 km/h in all progressions. Significant (p<0.05) differences were found for heart rate, VO2, and RPE between all four progressions in level walking and grade walking. However, no significant differences in all variables between each progression for level walking and grade walking. These results indicated that the walking at the slower speed of 2.0 km/h at higher grade of 30% is effective as much as the level running at 7.0 km/h, and more effective than brisk level walking at 5.5 km/h to improve cardiorespiratory fitness in untrained young women. In addition, developed equation of %HR and grade for untrained people in a low-speed grade walking, it has been understood to be given by the quadratic equation.
