Description
A variety of interesting phenomena such as dunes are observed in rivers. In order to enjoy the benefit of rivers, human beings have attempted to take control of rivers by understanding the mechanism underlying those phenomena. Since most of the phenomena are caused by the complex interaction among flow, sediment transport and stream morphology, it is not easy to understand physical processes involved in the phenomena. For the last several decades, mechanics relevant to rivers has been studied by a large number of researchers, and appropriate methodologies for describing and/or predicting the phenomena have been found. In response to recent increases in flood disasters, further efforts should be devoted to new challenges in river mechanics.
