Clinical trials were performed in patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia or mild diabetes mellitus, using earth-worm (Lumbricus rubellus) powder, one of the alternative and complimentary medicine, originally from traditional oriental medicine, along with the recent finding of one of its active principles, lumbrikinase, as an accelerator of fibrinolysis by Mihara, H. et al.<br>Methods: Objects were 10 out-patients of our hospital. Serial checkings of subjective complaints, ordinary blood chemistry and hematology, BMI, BP, etc. were performed. Brain MRI, neck MRA, ECG, etc. were also done at the beginning and the end of the study. The products were administered as 160mg capsule each, 3 times a day for 3 months.<br>Results: In 8 patients out of 9, who had any complaints, some improvements of subjective complaints such as fatigue, dizziness, coldness, insomnia, etc. were observed. Improvement ratio of complaints was 59%. The mean ratio of improvement grade of each 18 complaint was statistically elevated.<br>Among many indices, serum HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly elevated and serum LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lowered. No significant changes were observed among other parameters such as total cholesterol, TG, PT-INR, FDP, BS, HbA1C, BMI or BP.<br>Discussion and conclusion: This product might be applied to prevention of so-called lifestyle-related diseases, although its mechanism of actions should be more clarified.
