Abstract
The paper reports the first case of the development of high resistance to pyrethroids in the housefly in Japan. Spraying with certain pyrethroids in hog farms in the Mashiko area failed to control the fly population. LD50 values determined in the laboratory using the topical application method confirmed that the flies were extremely resistant to all the pyrethroids tested. The resistance level, however, decreased significantly when the flies were pretreated with piperonyl butoxide, suggesting the involvement of increased detoxication in the resistance mechanism. The flies were also resistant to fenitrothion and diazinon, but were susceptible to p, p′-DDT.
