Model loading tests of a shallow foundation on unreinforced sand ground and geosynthetics-reinforced sand ground were performed to investigate the instantaneous and rate-dependent settlement properties of the model ground. The results of model loading tests showed: a) the peak footing load and pre-peak stiffness increased by tensile-reinforcing; b) the elastic stiffness against vertical footing loading of the reinforced/unreinforced ground can be expressed by a power function of footing average contact pressures, and it is noticeably large when reinforced: c) the trends of the significant loading rate effects due to the material viscosity of sand and reinforcement that are observed on the footing settlement property are essentially similar to those of the sand and reinforcement. These results suggest that the rate-dependent bearing capacity property of geosynthetics-reinforced ground, including the elastic and plastic properties, can be simulated by numerical analysis incorporating nonlinear three-component rheology models for the sand and reinforcement.
